In edit mode, allow using the object mode's median point as pivot center
That is something that I think Blender is lacking and yet still needs such feature. I can snap the 3d-cursor in object mode to that position, but I think the original median point would still be very handy in some situations.

What advantage does this provide over just using the 3D cursor as you've described?

No need to go in object mode to snap the cursor.

Yeah. Also, it's kind of weird when you in object mode rotate the object and it rotates from the pivot point, but when you in the same mode rotate in edit mode, blender creates a "new" pivot point for the object.

I think *that* is a slightly different thing, though (and, for me at least, it's not that weird. With that default setting, you're rotating around the median point of what you have selected. In edit mode, you have individual elements selected, so it's natural for the median point to change.)
