Add buttons for Split and Separate in addition to hotkeys
There seems to be no button to perform a Split <kbd>Y</kbd> or Separate <kbd>P</kbd> action on faces and such in Edit Mode, whether it's Mesh, UV or other modes. The only way to do this seems to be to press the hotkey. This is impossible to figure out without being told (I had to google it https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?276309-Cutting-UV-s-in-UV-editor). If there were clearly marked buttons in the Mesh Tools and UV Tools menu (and other applicable modes) it would be easy to find even for new users.

This is easily doable with a little bit of Python code. The challenge, of course, is the same as the transform buttons in the Toolshelf, the operator works immediately when you click it. That's kind of non-ideal behavior for a button.

Why not in this case? If I Split a set of Mesh or UV faces with Y (or a button), the effect should be instant. No further action required. With Separate P it's slightly more complicated given the extra options (selection/material/loose parts) but this menu could either appear above the button, letting you pick the option there, or over the workspace. Or you could have multiple Separate buttons but I think the sub-menu is preferable.

My apologies. I was thinking about ripping with <kbd>V</kbd>. That immediately switches you to the Grab operator afterward. You are correct about Split.

Ripping seems like it could use a button as well, but then I would suggest only activating the Grab state upon clicking inside the workspace (after the button has been clicked)… though that’s more of a general paradigm shift for the interface I think? (perhaps something for another suggestion)

Yeah... I believe addressing that bigger issue is planned for 2.8, but I'm not sure what the status of that currently is.
